REBIRTH

Staring the space faring former New Teen Titans!
by
Clay Arceneaux, with nods to Michael, and Frankie for their input.

With a flash of light, a tiny, battered, one-man space craft erupted into normal space. Frantically the craft's lone occupant checked her navigational sensors to be sure she'd arrived in the right place. She was trying to reach Earth, but something had gone wrong. Oh, she was in the right system alright, but she'd come out of hyperspace too soon for some reason. Earth was still a tiny point of light ahead of her. Her face was wet, but not from tears as she gazed out the veiwport. Her head was spinning, but it wasn't excitement at being so close to her second home. She wiped the blood from her eyes as another wave of pain induced nausea threatened to overtake her. No, Koriand'r was far from pleased.

'X-Hal!' she thought. 'How could I have been so stupid! I'm in position to orbit their fourth planet not Earth. I'll have to…'

A blinking red light on her console demanded her attention. She stabbed the control, praying that whatever it is that's malfunctioning , it wasn't the stardrive. It wasn't. It was worse. She ran a systems diagnostic twice over to be sure, but to no avail. Her engines were fine, but the life support system was shorting out and all indications were she would never make it to Earth before it failed completely.

In pain and despair, the one time Princess, sank back into her chair. After all she'd survived, after all she'd fought through and endured, that it would end like this. Her mind went back over the events of the last few years. When she came to Earth the first time, she was just a run away slave from the Citadel Empire, barred from ever seeing her family again. But she'd found a new family in a group of teen heroes called the Titans, a new name and purpose as the heroine Starfire, and love in the arms of Dick Grayson, the man now known as Nightwing. But Raven, her former teammate and friend, had cost her everything she loved on Earth. No not really Raven, but that dark, evil part of her Raven always tried to hide from the world. No matter which, the effect was the same, she'd become used, confused, and hurt. Koriand'r didn't even trust herself, much less Dick and the other Titans. When the chance came to leave Earth and liberate her home world of Tamaran, she took it. Over the course of that struggle against the evil science obsessed race known as the Psions, she had buried the long time enmity between herself and her sister, Komand'r, and found herself in a new relationship with a man from her world called Ph'yzzon. She tried to love him, she really did. She even married him, but her heart was never fully in it. She still loved Nightwing too much to ever really let him go. Over the course of their battle with the Psions, her world was destroyed, but with the aid of her old teammates in the Titans they did defeat the Psions and claim a new world as their own. Raven, the good Raven , even stayed behind to help them rebuild. It was Raven who told her she was pregnant with Ph'yzzon's child. Raven left New Tamaran shortly after Koriand'r's son was born. Ph'yzzon and Kom had rebuilt their new world's defenses, and with the birth of Gra'zzon, it seemed New Tamaran was at the dawning of a new age. Then came the Sun Eater, and the betrayal at her sister's hands. Her world was destroyed by the alien monster, her son and family probably dead, yet she didn't have time to grieve. She had to reach Earth with the Dusk alien she had encountered, to warn her former home that it was to be the creature's next victim.

She never made it out of the system.

The Titans may have beaten the Psions back, but they had not totally defeated them. Like vultures, their ships lay just outside of New Tamaranean space, waiting to descend on the newly founded world in a moment of weakness. They intercepted her ship before she could make the jump to hyperspace. She knew she had to warn Earth, no matter the cost, so Koriand'r transported herself on board the lead Psion vessel and started unleashing the starbolts that earned her Earth name against the Psions and their Gordian henchmen, the self same starbolts she'd gained after being captured an experimented on by the Psions years before. She caused enough of a ruckus on board the Psion ship that her own vessel and Dusk were able to escape into hyperspace. As the Gordians finally subdued her, Koriand'r prayed that Earth received her warning in time. For the next few months, she was again the captive of the Psions. She watched helplessly as they picked through the remains of New Tamaran. While they found no survivors, few of the bodies they recovered could be identified. Not that this concerned the Psions in the least. They were happy to have the new tissue samples. They eventually got around to experimenting on her again. But for all their vast intellect, the Psions had apparently learned nothing from Koriand'r's previous "visit" with them. She again freed herself from their machines, and battled her way to a small escape ship. The battle had left her badly wounded, and the shuttle took a pretty heavy pounding before she made a hyper jump out of there.

That was one week ago. For the past seven stellar cycles Koriand'r had made jump to jump to jump. Always heading out in a different direction to try and keep the Psions from guessing her course. They had almost recaptured her twice. But it had been days since she last encountered them, and if any thing she thought she'd be safe this close to Earth. Even the Psions weren't crazy enough to pop into this system and risk the wrath of Earth's champions.

'And after all that,' Koriand'r thought. 'I'm going to die out here. Not from enemy fire, not from my injuries, but from a leaky shuttle.'

She tried to think of her options, but the throbbing of her head made it difficult.

'I have to… to get help. Have to try and signal Earth.' Koriand'r fought her way through the pain. 'The Justice League have a satellite… I think. Or wasn't that destroyed… No… wait… I can't remember.

"X'Hal!!" She cried aloud! "This is stupid! I'm sending a broad ban distress signal and just hope it reaches someone in time."

Koriand'r struggled to boost the range on the ships com system in the hopes that her signal might reach all the way to Earth. It was difficult to do only using her left hand, but her right hand and fore-arm were so badly broken that even trying to move them was almost enough to make her pass out. She was almost ready to send the signal when the proximity alarm went off. A ship was coming into the limited range of the craft's sensors. It had apparently been behind the smaller of the red planet's two moons, hidden from view when she arrived.

'Oh please let it not be a Psion ambush, not here, not now.' Then she corrected herself.

"No!" She said aloud. "I am Koriand'r, Princess of Tamaran, Warrior of the crags of Okaara! And I'm tried of running. If those little toads want to try something again, this time I'll give them far more than they ever bargained for. Let's see what those creeps have sent after me this time."

To her surprise (and silent relief), it wasn't a Psion ship after all. In fact though it seemed vaguely familiar, Koriand'r could remember ever seeing a vessel quite like it. The almost triangular ship was about the size of a light freighter of some kind, but though she had been from one end of known space in her life to the other, she could not recognize the technology that comprised it. She gave the ship a quick scan. No active weapon systems, in fact the whole ship seemed to be almost powered down except for one or two internal systems, and while there were life form readings, they were… fuzzy. What ever it was, it wasn't a Psion ship, and it wasn't getting ready to blast her out of space. She redirected her com signal and chanced opening a channel to the mysterious vessel.

"Attention vessel," Koriand'r paused, unsure of how much to tell the strange craft. "My life support is damaged and I am need of emergency assistance. Can you assist me?"

There was a long, terrible silence. And then with a start the mysterious craft seemed to come to life, running lights activated, engines came online, and the whole thing turned in space to point straight at her. Koriand'r gritted her teeth, and prepared to face certain death if the vessel fired on her from this range. And then, as she sat there shaking in fear, pain, frustration, and rage, a voice came back over the com system.

"Kory? That you, Goldie?"

"Who… Yes it's me but…" Kory head was swimming with questions, or was it just her injuries?

"Hang on, Princess." The familiar voice shot back. "I'll get you out of there."

Before she could answer, Koriand'r found herself surround by the shimmering lights of a transporter effect, and the cockpit of her damaged craft faded from view.

When she woke up again, Koriand'r found herself seated in chair in some kind of well lit sick bay area aboard the strange vessel. A small spherical device floated in front of her, an auto-doctor she'd seen used on Citadel ships. It was zipping around her, tending her injuries.

"Geez, girl, you got yourself messed up good this time." The disembodied voice spoke. "Shattered hand, busted ribs, several head injuries, some wicked blaster burns. What happened, Kory, the Psions get you again?"

"Yes, but how do you know me?" Koriand'r asked into the air. "Your voice sounds familiar but I can't… Victor?!?"

A holographic image of her former comrade Victor Stone snapped into existence. But not Victor as she remembered him. This image was of a completely human black male, not the shining silver Cyborg she had served with in the Titans, or the glowing red Techis she had last seen him as. Victor's image smiled broadly.

"Hiya, Princess." The image's smile quickly faded. "Kory, I'm… I'm sorry about what happened at New Tamaran. Gar and I went through that system just a couple of weeks after it happened and got run off by the Psion fleet. I wish we'd been there. Maybe we could have stopped it."

"It's alright, Victor. There was nothing you or I could have done to stop it. I'm glad that my companion reached Earth in time to stop it from being destroyed it as well." Kory said sadly. Then with a forced smile she asked "Is Gar here too? And why are you only appearing as a hologram?"

"What, you don't like my new look?" Victor smiled again, happy to change the subject. "Nah, Gar ain't here. Why don't you come on down to my lab and I'll tell you what's going on here."

"I'm not sure if I can walk that…" Kory began.

"Who said anything about you walking?" Victor asked. The chair Kory was in rose from the floor and began to hover. "Come on, I'll hover along with you"

The two old friends made their way into the corridor and glided through the ship's interior. For the first time in nearly six months, Kory felt safe again. Whatever the autodoc gave her it was really easing her pain. She felt she could think straight again for the first time in weeks. She nestled back in her floating chair and listened to Victor's tale.

"Well, after the Titans helped kick the Psion's off your world, you remember that me and Gar decided to go space exploring. We had a blast for the first few months, Gar even won us this ship in some kind of space poker game. And the more time passed after the rest of the Techis were killed, the more myself I became."

"You seem back to normal to me, Victor." Kory commented.

"Thanks." Victor smiled and continued. "Everything was going great until a few months back my Techis body started to act funny. I was feeling this strange drawing feeling. This need to go back to the spot where the Techis ship was destroyed. That's when we discovered what happened to your world, Kory, since it was in that system that the Techis died. I can't explain it, but I couldn't leave that area. So we hung around and waited for the Psions to leave. Gar was bored out of his mind and worried about me. But I couldn't let him know what was happening to me. My Techis body was starting to malfunction. They were a techno-organic collective remember. I only joined them because my original body was so screwed up at the time, I felt I had no choices. I hind sight I must have still been more out of it than we thought to join up with them in the first place. But after the rest of the collective died, that body couldn't exist long-term without them."

"Anyway," Victor continued as a door slide open for them. "we finally got to the spot where the Techis ship exploded and that's where we found this."

Inside the room was a three meter long, roughly cylindrical shaped object lying on a raised platform. Hundreds on cables were connected to it, as well as what looked like some sort of monitoring device.

"A Stasis Pod?"

"Yeah." 'Vic' moved over to stand beside it. "The continents of this stasis pod are the key to my continuing survival. All I had to do is figure out how to use it. I guess I got kind of obsessed with it. Gar got bored with my sitting around researching and experimenting, especially since I hadn't clued him in on what was going on. So a few weeks back I dropped him off on Earth at his request and parked the ship out here. I started the final phase of the experiment about a week ago. If it works, I'll be as good as new. Better even. It's going well so far. I shouldn't have to wait much longer."

"Vic, maybe its the pain medication your droid gave me, but I'm not following you." Kory shook her head. "Where are you exactly? And why the hologram?"

"I'm attempting to merge with the contents of the pod, Kory." Vic replied. "I set up a neural link to the main computer core so I could moniter ship functions and control some of it's systems. But me, the real me, I'm in the pod."

"I'm sorry, Victor, but I still don’t understand exactly what you mean. Real you?" Kory was pretty sure now that it wasn't the drugs, that Victor was just being cryptic, unusual for him.

"Let's just say…" The hologram's face beamed. "that I found myself."

Before Kory could answer, the ship was rocked by explosions! Alert claxon blared and Vic's holographic form flickered.

"Victor! What's going on?!?" Kory screamed!

"Damn! Psion pursuit ship just decloaked and started firing on us." Vic's hologram continued to flicker. "I'm trying to raise the shields and get us out of range, but when I designed my link up to the main computer I didn't have combat in mind. I don't know if it will hold…"

Vic's hologram form winked out of sight as the ship's hull rocked again. Kory rose from her chair and stumbled her way to a console. Apparently Vic's link had been broken, just as he feared it would. A quick check and Kory discovered she could control almost every system from this terminal. The ship was pounded again as Kory desperately tried to raise the shields. But her efforts were in vain, the second volley from the Psion vessel had knocked out the main shield generator. She was trying to get the back up systems online when the Psion's began hailing them.

"Attention vessel. Our scans indicate you are harboring a Tamaranean specimen of ours. We intend to retrieve her. Prepare to be boarded."

A Tamaranean curse on her lips, the orange skinned alien princess gave up on raising the shields and did a quick scan of the enemy ship. If she couldn't stop them, she might as well know how many she'd be facing. It was a small Psion pursuit craft, not much bigger the a shuttle craft. Her green, pupil-less eyes narrowed.

'Good!' she thought, going over the scan's data. 'There are only three Psions and 20 or so Gordians. They couldn't risk sending anything larger this close to Earth. I've handled twice that many before with no trouble at all.'

But her aggressive warrior's nature had gotten the better of her. For as she tried to turn on her heel and march to the corridor, her legs gave beneath her and she tumbled gracelessly to the floor. She struggled to her feet again. She summoned all her inner strength and the discipline forged in the fires of Okaara. She tightened the high tech sling that secured her broken right arm and brushed her volumous chestnut hair away from her face. She could hear a boarding party already onboard, making their way through the ship. She took a deep steadying breath. Yes she was injured, exhausted, and drugged, but she was Koriand'r. She was Starfire. And she would go down fighting.

Inside the stasis pod, Victor Stone's mind was racing. The Psion attack has severed his link to the ship and it would take too much time to reestablish it. Those reptilian creeps had probably already boarded by now and Kory was in no condition to fight them off. With grim resolution, he knew what he had to do. He had to complete the process now, immediately. True it was about 90% completed anyway, but nothing had been tested, half of the back systems hadn't been finished. But that didn't matter, his friend, no a member of his family was in danger and this was her only chance. Victor mentally bore down and attempted to complete in minutes the process that by all rights should have taken days.

The Psion was not pleased. When the slight reptilian scientist had accompanied his ten Gordian mercenary troops on board the wounded vessel he thought all they would need to do is collect their half dead specimen and leave. The last thing he expected was to have a screaming woman come flying down the corridor at them, energy bolts blasting from her hand. The physically weak Psion race had long relied on the nearly 3 meter tall, four armed Gordians for their defense. Imagine this Psion's annoyance at having two of his guards killed in the female's first attack. But the scientist in him could not help but marvel at the destructive power that his people had created in this subject all those years earlier. Yes, if it had not been for their experiments into her races natural ability to absorb and harness solar radiation which his fellows had preformed on the specimen and her sister, then neither would posses these remarkable energy wielding abilities. The Psion had begun to formulate a new test by which he could determine the exact erg output of this specimen given maximum solar exposure when the head of the nearest Gordian exploded. He was beginning to wonder if this pursuit and capture mission was going to be worth the costs when one of his servants struck the female in her bandaged arm with the staff he was carrying. With a scream the Tamaranean fell to the deck. She was greeted by a large green fist as her assailant pressed his advantage. This was much more to the Psion's liking. Though another species might have been bothered by watching a four armed brute pummel a beautiful female, the Psion's only concern was that the Gordian not irreparably damage this specimen before they could finish experimenting on her. His optimism didn't fade when a starbolt erupted out of the Gordian's back. She was off balance now, stumbling her way away from them down the corridor and firing blind. As his guards pressed their advantage, the Psion began recalculations for his next experiment.

Within the stasis pod, Victor Stone raced to finish his preparations. He quickly checked every system. Everything seemed fully operational. It was now or never. With an odd mix of fear, anticipation, excitement, and dread, Vic made the final connection that would bring his core consciousness back online.

Starfire was losing. Her head was swimming again, and her eyes wouldn't stay focused. She kept blasting away at her pursuers, but she wasn't hitting anything but bulkhead. The Gordians weren't even trying that hard to catch her anymore. They hung back, waiting for her to lose consciousness. And they were right. None of Kory's training or resolve could help her now. Her body had been pushed far past the limits of her endurance, and was failing her. She continued her retreat, until she stumbled back into the chamber where Vic lay helpless in his stasis pod.

'No! this is not where I ment to go!' The panicked thought blazed across her mind. 'Now they'll capture Victor as well. I'm sorry Victor. I've failed us both.'

Starfire slumped down next to the pod, trying to keep her quivering hand pointed at the open doorway. The Gordians approached the door way and she fired a starbolt, hoping to drive them back, but she missed by a mile. No, her pursuers didn't fear her anymore. With malevolent grins on their broad faces, the reptilian thugs entered the room.

With a snap and a hiss the pod split open. The startled Gordians took a step backward, training their weapons on the pod. Steam billowed from the open pod into the chamber. Kory struggled to turn and see what was happening. She heard a gasping inhalation of breath from within the pod. Something was moving inside there. Obscured by the smoke a large figure rose, standing inside the pod.

"Who invited you frog-faced freaks on to my ship?" The left eye of the figure flashed red.

Leaping from the pod, the figure laid into the nearest Gordian, slamming the alien into the bulkhead. Light glinted off this man as he effortlessly held the Gordian to the wall with a silver hand. The smoke began to settle, revealing the figure's full form. Starfire's eyes widened in shock and surprised. It wasn't the red and black glowing Techis form of Cyberion she had last seen, but the gleaming silver armored Cyborg she hadn't seen in years. True, he looked more like he did after he was rebuilt by the Russians than his original form., but just seeing his face again made her feel much better.

The Gordian's shock had worn off and they leveled their blasters at Cyborg. They unleashed a hail of deadly energy blasts, most of which ricocheted harmlessly off his armored form. Vic swung his captive into his comrades, knocking some of them down. A larger blast of energy knocked Cyborg off his feet. One of the Gordians stood holding a bazooka-like blaster in his arms, aiming it again at Cyborg.

"Nice gun." Vic smiled as he got to his feet. His armor began to shift. A pair of guns appeared over each of his shoulders, with smaller weapons appearing on each wrist. Plates slid into place over the exposed skin of his face. "Now try mine."

Fire erupted from his weaponry driving the Gordians back. Two fell beneath Cyborg's assault. Cyborg ceased fire, seeing the Gordian's had vanished around the corner. The weapons disappeared back into his armor and the right half of his face reappeared. He took the break in the battle to turn to his fallen comrade.

"You okay, Goldie?" He asked kneeling beside her.

"It's you! I mean really you again!" Kory exclaimed. "How did you…"

"I know. Pretty cool, huh?" Vic smiled. "I'll explain later, Kory. I've got to finish taking out the trash."

Almost in response to Vic's comment a Gordian claim rushing in, trying to smash Vic in the back with his massive staff. Cyborg spun around and caught the staff in one hand.

"Not big on fighting fair are you, lizard lips?" Cyborg sent a jolt of electricity into the staff, leaving the big alien dazed. "Good. Me neither."

With that Cyborg tore into the Gordian landing a quick succession of blows that left his opponent out cold before he knew what was happening. The three remaining Gordians tried to rush the armored human en masse. They faired little better. Cyborg dispatched them in quick succession. Vic was clearly enjoying him self. He smiled all the way through the fight. He was himself again. Sure his hair hadn't grown back yet, but that would come later. When it was over Cyborg stood in the midst of the unconscious attackers. He was breathing a little heavily, but he was enjoying being able to do that too.

Down the corridor the Psion stood in stunned silence. He had recognized the being from their files, a cybernetic organism from the Terran system. But he had joined the Techis some time ago. He shouldn't have been able to survive this long without the others. And now it was standing there staring down the corridor, staring at him. He clicked open his communicator and contacted his ship.

"If you're leaving, shrimp, take this lizard meat with you." Cyborg shouted down the hall.

A transporter beam flared, but it didn't whisk the Psion away. Rather 6 more Gordians appeared, armed with much heavier weapons.

"Leaving, Terran?" The Psion replied. "I think not, for now there are two excellent specimens aboard for our study. Surrender now or we will take you by force."

"Get stuffed, scale-dome!" Cyborg retorted. "You want Starfire, you going to have to come through me!"

"An unfortunate response." The Psion looked at the floor. "Gentlemen…"

The Gordians opened fire. The corridor exploded in a vast array of light and smoke. When it all cleared away, Cyborg was still standing, behind a shimmering force screen.

"You think I'd be stupid enough to leave this little Techis trick out of my upgrade? You frogs are dumber than you look." Placing his right hand to a pod on his belt, a small device detached and began to re-shape Cyborg's hand. "Now that you've seen my new tricks, let's drop this field and show you an old favorite. Folks, meet my white sound generator!"

Before the Gordians could react, Cyborg dropped his force field and fired. Waves of force washed over the boarders knocking the lot of them senseless. When the barrage ended, Cyborg brought his weapon to his face and blew over it. He walked over to a computer terminal. A pair of computer jacks extended from his fingers. Plugging himself into the computer, Cyborg activated the ships transporters and beamed his defeated enemies back to the Psion vessel. With a smile on his face, Vic activated his ship's weapon systems and began to pepper the Psion ship with laser fire. With the majority of their Gordian thugs out of action, the Psions had no desire to continue their attempts to retake Kory. As fast as their ship could take them they sped out of the system.

"Good riddance!" Cyborg said aloud. "Better check on Kory."

Running back to the spot of his rebirth, Vic found his gorgeous teammate unconscious against his stasis pod. As he knelt to lift her, he notice his chest plate was slightly too large and shaped wrong to lift her gently.

'Should have designed this a little better.' He thought. 'Not that this is going to be a problem.'

"Kory? Goldie? Hang on a sec, Princess." Vic said standing back up. "This will only take minute."

At his mental command, his armor began to slide and shift. Wrist and ankle components releasing and retracting into the main body. The shoulder plates lifted up and his chest plate separated down each side. Cyborg reached down and lifted the off his chest and back plates entirely. He set the armor down next to the pod. In truth he didn't look much different. Most of his body was still covered with silver metal. But he was overall much sleeker in shape, the metal on his limbs had a more banded look and there was more dark skin showing on his shoulders, chest, and thighs. He knelt again and gently lifted the wounded Titan. She stirred a little and was again surprised at Victor's appearance.

"Wha… Victor… you look like…" She mumbled.

"I know Kory. I'm me again." Vic responded.

"I'm … happy for… you…" Kory trailed off into unconsciousness, resting her bloodied head against his chest.

In the sick bay, Kory's diagnostics did not look good. She was hurt and hurt bad. Far more than Victor could hope to heal with his limited knowledge and resources. He did what he could to stabilize her for transport to the one place she knew she'd be both safe from the Psions and get some expert medical care. It was time to go home. A flood of conflicting emotions flowed through him. True he was himself again, for the first time in years, but there was a lot of unfinished business back on Earth. Particularly in New York, at the one place he'd need to take her: S.T.A.R.R. Labs. He caught his reflection in the monitor.

'Never thought I'd be happy to see this mug again.' He thought. 'Still, my life's been left pretty much a mess since that crap with Joey and the Wildebeests. Maybe I should just drop her at the JLA base and go.'

His emotions must have been showing, because he was brought out of his thoughts by a gentle hand touching his arm. Kory was conscious again, and even in her drugged and injured state she smiled up at Vic.

"It will be all right, Victor." She said. "Sarah is a strong woman, she can take this. Take me there if you need to. It will be nice to be home again."

"I thought Raven was the mind reader." Vic grinned and wiped the tear from his eye. "You got it, Pretty Lady. Let's go home."

To be continued in FDC's New Titans #131!!

Writer's notes: Well, there you have it. My first Titans tale. You will note that the Titans team has decided to count the events of the Final Night Black and White Preview issue as having happened. It put Kory in a good place for us, both in taking her out of her series end status quo and it gives us tons of toys to play with down the road. I also wanted to get Victor back as Cyborg, not as Cyberion. Vic was my favorite DC character back in the day, and more than anything I wanted to see some justice done to him since real DC has screwed him up so badly. When we planned all this I really wanted to get this story out before JLA/Titans began, but alas, it was not to be. But it is nice to see that the Pros and I are on completely separate paths to the same goal: Restoring the Titans to greatness. I welcome any comments and criticisms you might have about this story. If I got my facts wrong, blame Michael. He's my research division. If you thought it sucks in general, blame me since this was all my bright idea. While this story is pretty much wholly mine, our future issues will be much more a collaboration of our ideas, which are meshing remarkably well. You can look for the New Titans #131 sometime soon. We've got it fairly well plotted, but I gotta script it yet.
TITANS FOREVER!
