April Fool's Day Special #1

A Dent In Time
*Continuity note: This story is set between issues 7 and 8 of Supergirl Maid of Steel.
Dr. Xavier looked through the narrow window at the woman in the room, watching her as his colleague spoke.
"I'm not sure why the patient has been transferred here." Dr. Winthrop said, adjusting her glasses. "Surely she was better suited to her old facility. Helping Hands in Industry City is one of the best mental health facilities in the United States, especially for subjects of her nature."
"Her nature?"
"Meta-human. Surely Belle Reeve or Blackgate or Arkham…"
"Arkham isn't fit for anyone." Dr. Xavier cut Winthrop off. "And she is not a meta-human. At least not as far as anyone can tell. Her meta-gene is not active as far as her records show."
"Then explain how she is in her forties one moment, and then in her twenties the next moment. I've been watching her all morning and she's aged and de-aged before my eyes at least twenty times. This is just not something we're equipped to deal with her."
"We are the best mental health facility in the mid-west Anne." Dr. Xavier replied, looking far older than his forty-three years. He had been fighting cancer for nearly six months now and it was beginning to wear on him. "And, with Supergirl now here in Midway City, we're going to start dealing with more subjects of this type. Iron Heights is a good three hundred miles away."
"Supergirl should just go back to Metropolis. We don't need her kind here in Midway City." Dr. Winthrop sniffed, "The meta-humans come calling themselves heroes, and they save us from bank robbers and natural disasters. And that is followed by the meta-humans who call themselves villains and then they infiltrate the crime underworld and the next thing you know we're relying on the heroes to save us from the very things they've brought upon us."
"Sounds like you've been listening to Peter Yates and his Meta Research Development Group's rhetoric." Dr. Xavier scoffed, "Or State Senator Marsh who is running for governor."
Dr. Winthrop held her tongue, "Regardless, why transfer her from The Helping House all the way in California here?"
"Because of her odd aging condition. Helping House was not equipped for this." Dr. Xavier replied.
"Then send her back to New York where she was first committed." Dr. Winthrop snorted, "Let them deal with her. This is only going to bring us tragedy."
"Don't be so dramatic Anne." Dr. Xavier said, looking in at the woman who again appeared to be in her mid-twenties, her hair having grown a deep warm shade of brown, the gray having melted away with the wrinkles and folds of skin that had been there. "She was brought here because her benefactor wanted her here."
"In other words, he threw money in all the right directions." Dr. Winthrop replied.
"Or she." Dr. Xavier replied, "No one is quite sure who sent her here, only that someone did."
"So, beside being mentally disturbed and having odd aging and de-aging condition, Duela Dent has powerful friends."
"She was once an ally of the Teen Titans and a member of their Titans West off-shoot under the name Harlequin." Dr. Xavier replied.
"She was also called the Joker's Daughter for a time according to that file and claimed to be the daughter of Harvey 'Two-Face' Dent. She spent her youth emulating super-villains and running around with a group of meta-delinquents. She's trouble." Dr. Winthrop replied. "And is it safe for her to have that crystal ball?"
"Ms. Dent has not exhibited any violent tendencies toward staff members of other patients. Her last outburst was when a meta-human criminal attacked Helping Hands. And after defeating the criminal, she went back to her room with no trouble. And according to the file, the crystal ball helps keep her calm."
Within the room, Duela Dent paid them no heed. Instead, she sat rocking on her bed looking into the small crystal ball she grasped tightly in her hands. She smiled into the glass globe, watching the images unfold within.
Standing on top of the Midway City Finance Tower, Supergirl hovered several feet above the ground, her skirt and cape billowing in the wind.
Standing on the ground below her, Duela Dent stood with her hands on her hips looking out over Midway City as the sun began it's steady afternoon decline.
"What brings you to Midway City, Harlequin?" Supergirl asked, her curly hair held in place by a red headband modeled after the ones worn on Krypton. "I thought you were in California these days with Golden Eagle, Bat-Girl, and the rest of the newly reformed Teen Titans West."
"I am. But, I'm on a solo mission. I'm tracking my arch-nemesis Debbie Disco Queen. I heard through sources that she was here, trying to restart the crime empire I smashed last year. Our rivalry goes all the way back to New Jersey before I even joined the Teen Titans." Harlequin said, her face beautiful beneath the white grease-paint, her full red lips lush. The sun caught the brown in her eyes, giving them a goldish glint. "And if she does that, then she becomes a major problem for you Supie."
"Well, thanks for the head's up. The criminal underworld has been getting pretty weird here the past few weeks. They've been raiding night clubs and roller rinks. Not necessarily the typical crime spree." Supergirl responded.
"Night clubs? Or discotheques?"
"Discos. All of them." Supergirl replied, "I assume that fits your Debbie Disco Queen's MO?"
"To the max." Harlequin replied, "DeeDee, as she prefers to be called, robs discos, roller-rinks, record stores, boutiques selling disco-wear. She's totally obsessed by the stuff. According to the information my sources have been able to provide, and what DeeDee has told me in our clashes, she used to be a go-go dancer at a disco and when it was robbed by a group of super-villain terrorists who blasted her with a plasma ray. It warped her mind and gave her the ability to create disco light shows that she can use to confuse and hypnotize her opponents and even temporarily blind them if bright enough. She also gained flight and has super-dancing powers."
"Super-dancing?"
"She is the best disco dancer in the entire world thanks to those powers."
"I suppose it's no sillier than my super-ventriloquism or super-breath." Supergirl replied. "Hasn't any one told her that disco is dead? It's 1983. It's all New Wave now."
"She refused to let disco die." Harlequin replied, "One of her plots is to make disco popular again."
"I don't think anyone is that powerful. Not even Darkseid." Supergirl replied. "So, do you have a plan for finding her?"
"I do. My sources have indicated that she's set up shop in the Roller Boogie Super-Rink. And, I've heard through the grape-vine that they're hiring Skater Girls for their Skate Dance Team." Harlequin replied. "And, we're going to go undercover and get jobs there."
"Oh… Duela…. Why do I get the feeling that you're getting us into another awful mess…. Like that one in New York when we had to pretend to be punk rock girls to find that drug lord?"
"It will be nothing like that." Harlequin replied, "Besides, that was so not my fault. How was I to know that the drug lord had a gold Kryptonite ring?"
"Or the time we ended up in Florida fighting the android of Milt Wacky and his Wacky Mouse mutant army." Supergirl groaned.
"Flukes. Each and every one. This time will be different." Harlequin replied, "I promise."
Supergirl flew over Midway City, panicking because she was going to be late again. In her two weeks at the Midway City Museum she'd been late three times. Already her boss Jocelyn Rogers had spoken to her about it. It just couldn't be helped, there had been a bank robbery with some stolen S.T.A.R. Labs tech and she'd had to stop it and get the stolen tech back to the lab.
Supergirl heard a scream for help from below her, swooping down she found a woman in a white polyester paint suit and bleached-out feathered hairdo holding back three police officers with sparkling lights exploding from her right hand as she clutched a bag of stolen jewelry in her left hand.
"Now, this isn't very nice." Supergirl chided the woman, pulling the cops out of the line of sparkling light. The light struck Supergirl as she lifted the cops from the ground. It didn't hurt so much as tingle, but the feeling did begin to drain from her arms. She had super-strength and near invulnerability, she could only imagine how it was affecting the cops. Supergirl set them safely out of the way, spinning around to face the woman in polyester. "And that outfit… that's not very nice either. Didn't you know? The 70's are so over."
"We meet again Supergirl. And you in a new costume…one much nicer than your skirt and headband travesty. The 70's live forever… the fashions of the 80's? So over." The woman smiled. Bright sparkling light shot toward Supergirl.
"I don't think we've met before." Supergirl said, "I'd remember someone as clueless as you."
"Don't you remember? Me, you, Harlequin? A big throw-down down at the Roller Boogie Super-Rink? You and Harlequin went undercover as Skate Girls, but I knew. And I nearly robbed you of all your powers with my Gold K medallion."
"What are you talking about? What is a Gold K medallion?" Supergirl covered her eyes as the light bombarded her.
"Gold Kryptonite. The most dangerous kind. Duh. The one that robs a Kryptonian of their power permanently. Don't play dumb with me Supergirl. I know you might want to keep your weaknesses secret, but it's too late. I know all about Gold K. And I'll let the entire world know!" The woman giggled.
"Who are you? You aren't making any sense." Supergirl said, "There's no such thing as Gold Kryptonite. And we've never met before."
"I fought you and Harlequin to a stand-still! I only lost because I was betrayed by one of my underlings. He had fallen for you in your undercover guise of Kara Zorel!" The woman said, laughing maniacally. "Surely you remember Debbie Disco Queen!"
"I don't. And don't call me Shirley." Supergirl said, still shielding herself from the spray of light. It still didn't really hurt, but it was making it hard to see and keeping her from advancing any closer to the crazy woman in her white disco suit.
"I've never teamed up with Harley Quinn. She's a bad guy. Did you hang out with her in Arkham? That might be why you're having a fuzzy hard time dealing with reality." Supergirl said. Times like this, she wished she had super-breath like Clark. How handy that would be. But, she would just have to make due with a TK blast.
Supergirl felt the TK energy building in her head, she was having a hard time focusing it though due to the barrage of light. She needed focus or the TK blast would just go wild, hitting everything within a few feet and not doing much damage to Debbie Disco Queen over there. When she'd been just Matrix, focusing the TK blasts had been easy and happened without thought. Once Matrix and Linda Danvers had merged, the TK blasts had become harder to control and more difficult to work with in many ways-to the point where Supergirl rarely used them anymore. However, a situation like this, where the loss of her angel powers was most acutely felt, the TK blast was an old reliable friend.
Through the glare, Supergirl could see the dark shape of Debbie Disco Queen as she backed away.
"I think it's time that I be leaving Supergirl. I have places to go, people to see, and diamonds and jewels to fence."
"No, stay. Let's hang out." Supergirl replied, pushing all the TK energy to the center of mind, visualizing it into a small ball of energy, spinning and glowing packing a wallop. She knew that TK blasts were invisible and had no real shape-it was merely energy from her mind. But, she'd found as after the merge, it was easiest to use the TK blasts if she visualized in her mind a shape and pattern for it.
"Surely you don't think I'm stupid. You'd capture me and turn me into the police."
"You are stupid." Supergirl released the TK blast. The focused energy hurtled toward Debbie Disco Queen slamming into her forehead and knocking her off her feet. Landing roughly on her behind, the villain slid several feet, the sound of ripping polyester mingling her tangled cry of pain. The bag of jewels flew from her hands. "And stop calling me Shirley."
Supergirl advanced toward Debbie Disco Queen, even as the light show continued to dance in front of her eyes. She wondered if her eyes had sustained some damage during this skirmish. Supergirl frowned. Her remaining powers and abilities had been less than predictable since losing her angel powers. Hopefully her invulnerability and super-healing were still working fine. Otherwise she might have spots dancing in front of her eyes for the rest of her life.
"So, where did you escape from? You kind of sound like an Arkham girl. They breed them especially crazy in Gotham City." Supergirl said, lifting Debbie Disco Queen up. The villainess groaned, pain shooting through her body.
"You know where I'm from. You know all about me. We fought before Supergirl. Don't you remember?" Debbie Disco Queen moaned, close to unconsciousness. A miniature disco globe hung suspended from a chain around her neck.
"I'm sure I would remember." Supergirl replied, she turned toward the police officers. "Do we have someone coming who can contain her? Once she gets her wind back she's going to let loose with those lights from her hands again."
"S.T.A.R. Labs lent us some energy dampeners for us to use until we get our Meta-Crime Special Unit up and running and supplied. It should hold her until we figure out where to send her." One of the officers said.
"I'll see that you pay for this Supergirl." Debbie Disco Queen groaned. "Duela has a message for you. She wants you to know that destiny approaches. Lord Xenon is coming."
"What?" Supergirl asked, spinning toward the woman losing consciousness.
But, there were no answers to be had. Supergirl watched as the woman began to go translucent, before fading from sight altogether.
"What just happened?" The police officer asked her.
"I'm not sure." Supergirl said, looking at the space the badly garbed woman had just occupied. "Well, I need to get going boys."
Supergirl leapt into the sky, resuming her course to the museum. She was now officially thirty minutes late. Jocelyn was so going to ream her for this one.
Duela Dent's eyes unfocused from the images unfolding within the crystal ball as she became aware of the orderly bringing her lunch in.
"I hope I didn't disturb you Duela." The orderly said.
"Um…. No. Not really. I was just watching a memory in my crystal ball." Duela Dent smiled at the man, whose name tag identified him as Phil. Phil noted that she was a pretty girl, despite the dark circles and haunting look around the eyes.
We have baked chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy for ya today Duela. As well as some macaroni and cheese." Phil the Orderly set the tray down on the desk beneath the small window that overlooked the lush hills the surrounded the Midway City Mental Health Care Facility.
The hospital was a sprawling four story complex referred to as a campus located five miles outside of the eastbound city limits of Midway City. They'd referred to it as a campus for as long as anyone could remember because it made it sound less imposing and dire, even though few of the patients housed here every checked out. Most of them were too far gone to ever be turned back out into society in any capacity.
Phil had read Duela's file ahead and found hers a particularly sad case.
Duela Dent had been left on the front steps of an orphanage in Gotham City. She had grown up there until being adopted at the age of nine by Harvey and Gilda Dent. Then shortly after Duela's fourteenth birthday Harvey Dent was deformed and became the criminal Two-Face. One of Two-Face's first acts as a super-criminal had been to terrorize his wife and daughter. Duela was badly scarred by the attack and spent her first period of time in a mental hospital. Not long after being released she first became known as the Joker's Daughter, to torment her father's insane hatred of the Joker, and allied herself with Robin and later the Teen Titans. Shortly thereafter, she took the name Harlequin and adventured as a Teen Titan until they disbanded. For a period of time, she had a few adventures with Robin and a few more solo adventures before going back to school in pursuit of a degree in law enforcement. Her first year back in school after being a Titan, Two-Face attacked her again, leaving her for dead. During her recovery she gained weight and suffered depression, going in and out of out-patient status at several facilities.
It was during the Crisis of the Anti-Monitor, that Duela first exhibited strange aging. She aged to forty over night and was hospitalized again. During her hospitalization Duela aged and de-aged several times over a six month period until she finally was released. Duela Dent went back to school and completed her degree, going straight to the police academy before moving to New Jersey where she was hired to a department there. Duela Dent's life had progressed normally until the Alien Invasion, during the gene-bomb the Dominators had activated as a final desperate act, Duela's aging and mental problems returned. And Duela had been committed in one institution or another since.
"My name is Phil, Duela. And, I'll be serving your lunch and breakfast while you're here. Any questions you have, feel free to ask them. I'm here to help." The orderly said, chipper and cheerful.
Duela looked up from the crystal globe long enough to smile and say tentatively, "Thank you."
"No problem."
"Can you call Supergirl for me? A monster is coming for her. And he's going to kill her again." Duela said quietly, "She has to know. We were friends you know. Supergirl and I were tight. We fought Debbie Disco Queen and the Incredible Volcano Man and the Squirrel Keeper."
"I've never heard of those villains." Phil replied.
"No one has. Not anymore. There was a Crisis. Worlds lived. Worlds died. And most of who I was was wiped out. Or changed. Who Is Donna Troy? Everyone is always asking that one. But, you know what? Who cares? She's always gonna be Wonder Woman's sister. No matter what everyone else wants you to think this week. The real question is who is Duela Dent? Not who I was. Not who I'm gonna be. But, who am I now? That's the real question." Duela whispered, her eyes growing large. "I bet Supergirl doesn't even remember me. She's not the Supergirl she used to be."
"Supergirl wasn't around when you were a Titan." Phil said quietly. "But, it's OK. I know that sometimes it can get a little mixed up in our heads. Happens to me all time."
"Supergirl…. She was killed. It was horrible. The Anti-Monitor killed her. He's coming back you know. Lord Xenon…. He will walk among us."
"Have a good day Duela." Phil smiled brightly, leaving the room.
Linda Danvers sat at her desk, researching the artifact she was trying to catalogue. It was a goblet that had been located in a dig in South Africa last year by one of the museum's excavation teams. Comparing it to similar objects found in the region, she had been able to narrow its period down. But, she wanted to be more precise. The swirling patterns on the clay goblet were quite exquisite and far more advanced in its crafting and artistic design than most of the relics coming from the region within the time frame this goblet had to have come from.
The work room around her was quiet, with the rest of the staff-her co-worker Craig Morris included, off doing other things. Jocelyn had politely reamed her this morning when she'd finally gotten there. But, it had been embarrassing none the less. How did Clark balance a secret identity and a job? In Leesburg she'd been a college student and freelance artist, and had always had her parents to fall back on, but now with Leesburg gone and her inheritance and insurance tied up-they were dragging their feet on the fact that there were no remains of Fred or Linda Danvers. The insurance agent had actually had the nerve to tell her, "With no bodies, it is entirely possible they are somewhere waiting for you to collect the insurance. People are not beyond taking advantage of national tragedies and disasters to further themselves." It made Linda so angry. Who would lie about their parent's death? Linda felt tears welling up inside as the memories washed over it. The pain was still so fresh and so blinding sometimes. Linda had wished for the angel powers while sitting there with that insurance agent. She would have burned him alive had she still had them. Which of course meant it was for the best she did not have them. Burning evil insurance agents alive with angel fire wasn't the same thing as destroying a demon or the truly wicked. If only…
The silence of the office was quickly shattered when Craig Morris came running in, frantic.
"You won't believe it Linda! There's a man outside destroying things! He has lava shooting from his hands and is dressed in traditional Hawaiian garb." Craig said, frantic.
"Oh my God. You're right. I wouldn't believe that. Not at all." Linda said, hoping she sounded more sincere than she felt.
Linda jumped up and ran from the office rushing out of Craig's sight so she could transform into Supergirl.
Moving so fast that she was only a blur of red and blue to anyone traveling the halls, room, and corridors of the museum, Supergirl was outside in a matter of seconds, finding just what Craig had said she was.
A tall muscular guy in a grass skirt and with a lei of dark shiny black stones and blood red orchids. His face was marked with yellow and white ceremonial paint.
"Supergirl! We meet again!"
"I don't think we've ever met." Supergirl said to the man, sizing him up.
"Ah, but surely you remember your old friend-the INCREDIBLE VOLCANO MAN!" The man laughed maniacally, hot molten lava shooting from his hands. People screamed, rushing out of his way as the lava splattered the street and buildings, eating away concrete, asphalt, and steel.
"No. Not at all." Supergirl said, pulling people out of the way of another burst of molten lava. "And don't call me Shirley."
Harlequin watched from the catwalk, her eyes following the Incredible Volcano Man's goons as they carried an unconscious Supergirl toward the Incredible Volcano Man's flaming fiery pit. The green kryptonite lei around her neck kept the Maid of Might from coming to. Frowning, Duela wondered how she was going to get them out of this one. They were outnumbered badly, and while she was an accomplished acrobat and had extensive training in martial arts-not to mention her bag of tricks, the Incredible Volcano Man had at least fifty henchmen and goons down there. And with Supergirl slowly dying from kryptonite poisoning it was looking worse.
"What would Robin do?" Harlequin asked herself, trying to remember what Dick would have done in a situation like this. If this was Wonder Girl down there, bound with her own lasso and her bracelets welded together, what would Robin do to save her? Harlequin looked at the warehouse ceiling, noting the metal rafters. Plenty of room for swinging around. The only problem was the rafters were too high and having to go down far enough to reach Supergirl and carry her off would be difficult. She wasn't sure if even Robin could have pulled that one off. Gravity and physics could be a super friend's worst enemy.
The Incredible Volcano Man sat on a throne of bamboo at the mouth of the lava pit, laughing maniacally.
"Finally we have defeated Supergirl. Soon she will be dead. And then we can search for her partner… the Harlequin. Just wait until laughing girl gets her due."
A brilliant grin suddenly lit up Harlequin's garishly painted face as a plan occurred to her.
From the bag of tricks on her hip, Harlequin pulled a grappling line. With a deft flick of the wrist, she tossed the hook into the air, securing it on a rafter before swinging out over the room.
"I'm here for my due." Harlequin said, dropped down beside the Incredible Volcano Man.
"Foolish girl! You will die!" He roared, spreading his arms out. The flesh on the palms of his hand began to grow bright red as they began to heat up. "This sayeth the Incredible Volcano Man!"
"I bet you say that to all the girls!" Harlequin laughed madly, "And for that, I shall give you a kiss!"
From her pack, Harlequin pulled a giant pair of lips tossing them at the Incredible Volcano Man. The lips struck him and with a grotesque smacking sound, the lips opened like a giant trap, snapping shut on him. The Incredible Volcano Man screamed in pain, as the lip trap brought him to his knees on the ground in front of his throne.
Harlequin turned her attention to his goons, holding Supergirl's unconscious form on the other side of the lava pit.
"Get her!" One of the goons said.
As they rushed her, Harlequin did a back-wards somersault over the lava pit landing safely on the other end just as they reached the side where she'd just been standing.
Harlequin knew this was a matter of timing and if she was even a second off, both she and Supergirl would die at the hands of these henchmen.
Quickly Harlequin scooped the Kryptonite lei from Supergirl's neck, tossing it into the lava pit where it quickly sank. The flowers burned to a blackened crisp only seconds after landing on the boiling red liquid hot magma.
From her trick bag, Harlequin pulled a gun. She pointed it at the men advancing toward her.
"Stop where you are! Or I'll shoot!" Harlequin said.
One of the henchman laughed, "Everyone knows that heroes don't kill!"
Harlequin pulled the trigger. A boxing glove exploded from the barrel of the gun, knocking the goon from his feet.
"I'll hand this to you, jerk. You're almost kind of smart." Harlequin laughed.
"You're outta tricks lady!" Another goon said, as they surrounded Harlequin on all sides, including the opposite side of the lava pit. For the first time, she could feel the heat coming of the lava pit, as a small trickle of sweat beaded up on her forehead. Harlequin felt a moment of relief that her face-paint was a special blend that Robin had helped her develop-resistant to sweat, water, and anything other than the special solution that removed it. It was the easiest way to protect a secret identity.
"Maybe. But I'm an ace in the hole." Supergirl said, pulling herself to her feet behind Harlequin. With a blast of super-breath, Supergirl knocked all the henchmen off the feet, sending them crashing into the walls of the warehouse with heavy thudding slams. Supergirl then turned to the Incredible Volcano Man still in the lip trap, "Now what are we going to do with this one?"
"Jail? Or at the very least a one way trip to Detroit." Harlequin replied, "Of course, nothing he could have done is bad enough to send him to Detroit."
Supergirl shook her head, groaning. "You have the worst sense of humor."
Harlequin laughed boisterously, "It's my thing Supie."
Supergirl moved more innocent bystanders out of the way as the Incredible Volcano Man trashed the street in front of the Midway City Museum.
"I've got to stop him." Supergirl said to herself, "But, he just keeps endangering people."
The police were getting road blocks up and trying to keep people behind them, but the panic in the street was too much for the few officers on-site. Hopefully more were on their way or else control would be lost even more.
As Supergirl set the pedestrians down and turned her attention to the Incredible Volcano Man. An incredible thing began to happen-the Incredible Volcano Man began to fade.
"It's time for you afternoon medication, Duela." Nurse Rosakis said, coming into the room.
Duela's brown eyes lifted from the image of Harlequin and Supergirl in the crystal ball just as it broke and faded. With dread, Duela watched the nurse pour several pills into a cup. The pills were various colors and all for different things. There was one for anxiety, one to help her sleep, one to keep her heart from racing which happened sometimes when the rapid aging would start.
Duela set the crystal ball onto the small brass bracket she kept it on and took a deep breath as the process of taking medication began.
Linda gathered her things, looking at the clock on the wall. She was supposed to meet
Will Payton for dinner shortly. And, she was running late. She'd ended up staying late to make up time after the Incredible Volcano Man fiasco. Jocelyn hadn't noticed that Linda had disappeared during the ruckus.
"You're here late." Craig Morris said, smiling at her.
Linda smiled back, liking the twinkle in his eyes. "Yeah, that whole weird thing with Supergirl and that weird villain ended up taking up too much time. I was supposed to finish with that goblet today, so I wanted to spend more time with it. However… I'm nowhere close to properly cataloguing it. The date is a bit tricky."
"You want to go get a drink or something?"
"I'm good." Linda grinned, "I'm meeting my roommate for dinner."
"Oh. OK then. Maybe another time?"
"Definitely." Linda replied.
"I'll walk you to the light-rail station if you'd like." Craig said, pulling on a jacket.
They walked out of the museum, half-way to the train stop the there was a horrible roaring sound that filled the air, followed by a crashing sound.
"Oh my God." Craig whispered.
"What?" Linda asked, then paused looking up to the sky. "Is that…? Oh… Is that Godzilla?"
The giant lizard stepped out from between two buildings, blocking the road in front of them.
"This can't be happening." Craig said, his eyes wide and his mouth agape in fear.
"Oh, I think it can be." Linda replied, looking at the giant green lizard who regarded her with angry yellow eyes.
Godzilla looked down at them, looking annoyed and confused.
"ARRGGHHH!!" It growled, then swatted at the building it was standing next to, smashing it and sending its top half raining down into the street.
"RUN!" Linda said, pushing Craig out of the way.
Without thinking about it, a TK blast exploded from her, slamming into the debris and knocking it away. Rushing over to Craig, Linda pulled him to his feet.
"We have to get out of here." She said.
Craig nodded without a word and allowed Linda to lead him. They ran several streets, the sound of the rampaging monster shrieking and destroying buildings was loud, echoing to them.
"Was that really Godzilla? I didn't think he existed." Craig said when they came to a stop several blocks later. He was out of breath and panting.
"I didn't think so either. But, apparently he does." Linda had to ditch Craig somehow so she could go back there and stop Godzilla from destroying the city.
"This is all too crazy." Craig said.
"Craig… I'm going to go and find a police officer. They need to know what's going on. You stay here." Linda said.
Craig looked at her, and nodded without a word.
Linda rushed off, hoping that Craig would be OK. He needed to get better at mayhem and crisis if he was going to be her co-worker. Because this kind of weird stuff seemed to follow her around like a lost puppy.
Once Linda was around the corner, she made the change to Supergirl and took to the air. As she streaked toward it, the monster turned its attention to her. His yellow eyes blazed in the night.
It opened its mouth and screamed and a geyser of fire and flame came bursting from its mouth, streaking straight toward her.
Supergirl easily avoided the flame, flying up and around, arcing toward the creature so quickly that it didn't even see her. She came around behind it, grabbing it by the neck and lifting it into the air.
Godzilla made a squealing sound, as Supergirl carried it away from Midway City and toward the lake. The giant monster continued breathing fire, while trying to squirm out of Supergirl's grip. But, it had no luck.
Supergirl dropped it into Midway City Lake, where it landed with a massive splash. The monster quickly surfaced, looking up at Supergirl with a perturbed look on it's face.
"Why you do that?" It asked in a gravelly voice. "You make Godzilla wet."
"Oh cheese." Supergirl groaned, "You have got to be kidding me. Could this day get any weirder?"
"You drop Godzilla in water. Bad girl." Godzilla shook its finger at Supergirl.
"You were destroying the city and breathing fire. What do you suggest I should have done?"
"You should let me rampage. Monsters need rampage. Is our purpose in life. Me not throw you in river for flying around in ugly blue costume and red cape. Me not ruin your night for having blonde hair."
"That is completely different. I'm not destroying things." Supergirl folded her arms across her chest, coming down to stand closer to the monster's face. "You're destroying a perfectly innocent city. If you are needing to rampage, you should go somewhere else. Like Detroit."
"Me monster! Me have to destroy innocent city! No fun when evil city! Against monster rules!" Godzilla began to pout like a child. "You no fun. Me hate you."
"Don't you think hate is a little strong a word?" Supergirl asked him with a raised eyebrow. "Surely there is somewhere else you can rampage that won't cause people to be harmed."
"No. There's not. My name Godzilla. Not Shirley." Godzilla replied.
"Oh, my god." Supergirl shook her head. "This CANNOT be happening."
"Me no like you." Godzilla said, "Me go back to Midway and destroy. You can no stop me!"
"Wanna bet?" Supergirl asked.
"Oh… no. Not again!" Godzilla groaned, as he began to fade away.
Supergirl floated in place looking after him, knowing that something really weird was going on, but not sure what. She thought of Debbie Disco Queen and the Incredible Volcano Man and now… Godzilla. Strange. There was obviously something connecting the three for them to all fade away in the same manner.
"I'll have to figure it out later." Supergirl said finally, flying back toward Midway City. Hopefully there was still time to meet Will for dinner.
In her room, Duela Dent stared vacantly at the TV screen which was now filled with snow.
"The cable just went out, Duela." The night nurse Marv told her, snapping the TV off.
"But, I was watching Godzilla VS Earth." Duela said quietly. "Can't you fix it?"
"Unfortunately not. There was something that happened in downtown Midway City. It caused a couple of blocks to loose power. When they re-routed the power, it killed the generator the cable company uses. So, the cable is out until at least the morning."
"But, I love Godzilla." Duela said quietly.
"Sorry, Duela. It's late anyway. You should be getting some sleep. You have a big day tomorrow. It's your first day in group and you get to meet your new doctor and all the other patients. You should get lots of rest." Marv carefully pried the crystal ball from Duela's hand. The staff had been warned the Duela had a tendency to fixate on the crystal, staring into it for hours a time. She claimed it was a souvenir from an adventure that had taken her to some place called Gemworld. But, so much of what Duela said was untrue-wrapped up in her delusions.
"OK." Duela said, reluctantly relinquishing the crystal ball.
Drifting into a fitful sleep, Duela began to dream away from the safety of her crystal ball. In it she was still a Teen Titan and Supergirl was her best friend, and they had adventures that saved the world. And there had never been a Crisis or an Anti-Monitor and she had never met the Time Trapper and therefore lost her mind. Duela smiled lightly in her sleep as the dreams unwound and she relived a life that had been lost and could never be again.
